I have no words & I must design

(Costikyan, 1994)

Greg Costikyan, “I have no words & I must design: toward a critical vocabulary for games”. Conference publication, 2002 University of Tempere game studies conference.

To understand games, to talk about them intelligently, and to design better ones, we need to understand what a game is, and to break “gameplay” down into identifiable chunks. We need, in short, a critical vocabulary for games.

Games as activity

(Stenros & Waern, 2010)

Abstract: Game studies would benefit from acknowledging that digital games should be studied as a special case of games rather than the other way around. Digital games research tends to look at games as fixed structures or media, largely ignoring the role of the player. Conversely, play and player studies tend to ignore the role of design. We argue that in order to uncover the relationship between game design, game activity and game experience we need to put the game activityin central focus. If games are approached from this perspective, we should study them simultaneously as consciously designed and socially enacted.
